University Centre Somerset student named Cornish Mutual South West Agricultural Student of the Year
Holly Sampson has been named Cornish Mutual South West Agricultural Student of the Year, recognising her passion and commitment to building a future in farming.
Selected from this year’s Cornish Mutual Young Farmer Bursary recipients, the award celebrates a student who has demonstrated enthusiasm for agriculture and an ambition to develop their skills within the industry.
Holly, who is studying agriculture at University Centre Somerset, said: “It’s a great honour to be named Cornish Mutual South West Agricultural Student of the Year. I still don’t think it has fully sunk in, especially being up against such strong candidates.”
Having grown up on a mixed beef and sheep farm, Holly has seen first-hand how farm businesses must adapt to changing circumstances.
“My grandad is my biggest inspiration,” she said. “I admire his passion for every area of the farm. He’s shown me that life throws challenges at you, but it doesn’t mean everything has to stop. Sometimes you just have to slow down and change your mindset.”
Holly said receiving the award is recognition of the effort she has put into her studies and a reminder of what can be achieved.
“It means a huge amount to me and shows the hard work I’m putting into university is paying off. It also shows other students anything is possible when you step outside your comfort zone.”
During her course, Holly has become interested in a variety of areas including sheep production, genetics and farm business management. Looking ahead, she plans to gain international experience before returning to build her career in the UK.
“I’m hoping to travel to New Zealand and Australia as soon as possible, then come back and find a role in the industry that suits me best. Ideally, I’d like to combine working on a farm with a more office-based, customer-facing role.”
Holly urges other young people to consider a career in agriculture.
“This industry offers such a wide range of opportunities and can open so many doors. I’d definitely recommend the agricultural college route; I’ve made friends for life and learned so much across different areas.
“I would also encourage students to apply for the Cornish Mutual bursary. Not only does it provide financial support, but it’s also recognition for the hard work you put into your education, which can really help when applying for jobs in the future.”
In addition to this award, Holly also received a Cornish Mutual Young Farmer Higher Education bursary of £750.
The Cornish Mutual Young Farmer Bursaries form part of the Future Farming Programme, which supports the long-term future of agriculture across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset. To find out more, click here.
