South West insurer Cornish Mutual has welcomed two new non-executive members to its Board of Directors. Sue Turner and Richard Lane join the ten-strong Board, which leads the company to ensure it continues to offer the very best service to its Members.
With teams based across the region, Cornish Mutual insures farms and rural businesses across the South West. The new Board Members will support the organisation as it develops and expands in Somerset and Dorset.
Sue Turner lives in North Somerset and is Chief Executive of South West charity Quartet Community Foundation. Earlier in her career, she was South West Director for the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), where her role covered a large area from Dorset to West Cornwall. She has also been director of a charity which worked with businesses to encourage young people to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, and inspire them to follow careers in business and industry. Prior to joining Quartet, Sue was Director of Communications for The Bristol Port Company, the UK’s most centrally located deep sea port.
Sue recently discovered that her grandfather, who was a farmer, set up a mutual building society with friends in the 1950s. She said: “I firmly believe in people supporting each other and giving something back. It was that principle of mutuality that first attracted me to Cornish Mutual. Though they fulfil different roles, Quartet Community Foundation and Cornish Mutual share a similar outlook and many of the same aims, being focused on doing the very best for those they are designed to support.
“It is important for any organisation to develop and focus on the future. I see my role as offering new ideas and a different perspective.”
Based in Dorset, Richard Lane is a Chartered Insurer and Chartered Manager with extensive experience in general insurance. Managing Director of Ansvar Insurance, he previously worked for the Royal Insurance Group, Zurich and LV.
Richard, who lives near Bournemouth, has experience of change management and recognises the importance of people in achieving business results, utilising skills that he honed at senior level in the Territorial Army.
Richard said: “Cornish Mutual offers a high degree of personal service from a highly skilled group of people. I have been really taken by the enthusiasm of all the employees. Cornish Mutual is not just focused on insurance, it is committed to making sure Members get their needs met.
“As the rural market changes, with more Members branching out into diversification businesses, I can offer experience in the commercial insurance market. My focus will be on how we can develop the company to best meet the needs of the next generation.”
Alan Goddard, Managing Director for Cornish Mutual said: “I am delighted to welcome Sue and Richard to our Board of Directors. Both bring a wealth of experience that will be extremely beneficial to us as we continue to grow and develop the organisation. Their knowledge of Somerset and Dorset will also support our growth strategy in this part of the region. Importantly, they both share our commitment to Members and a real appreciation of what we stand for.”
