Supporting Businesswomen in the South West

Cornish Mutual is delighted to be sponsoring the Entrepreneur of the Year category of the Devon & Cornwall Venus Awards 2017/18. The prize will be awarded to a woman who dares to take risks in business that pay off.
Referred to as the ‘Working Women’s Oscars’, the Nat West Venus Awards have spread across the country after they were first launched in Dorset in 2009 to recognise, reward and celebrate women in business. Last year’s awards attracted more than 1,500 nominations so organisers are once again expecting a big response from across the region.
Sharon Plowright, Head of Sales and Operations at Cornish Mutual, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for both organisations and the nominees. The South West is home to many successful business women. We want to ensure that these talented individuals are recognised for all the hard work they do in supporting business in rural areas.”
If you know an inspirational businesswoman why not nominate her for an award? Contact our offices for details, or visit www.venusawards.co.uk

Are you an Airbnb host?

At Cornish Mutual we have been seeing a steady increase in enquiries from Members who are considering becoming hosts for short term lettings websites, such as Airbnb.
If you are thinking of renting out your home through sites like Airbnb, Wimdu, or Homestay, or via more traditional letting agents, it is important to understand that your standard Home Insurance does not cover you for hosting guests.
Please give Cornish Mutual a call as we may well be able to extend your home insurance policy.

A Successful Show Season

We would like to convey a big thank you to the thousands of Members who have visited us at shows this year. Not only does Cornish Mutual have marquees at all the major county shows, we are committed to having stands at events like Frome Cheese Show, Chagford Show and Holsworthy Show.
Member Services Coordinator Amanda Booker said: “These events really are the highlight of the year, as they are such a great opportunity for us to catch up with Members. This year we have welcomed thousands and thousands of Cornish Mutual Members to our marquees at shows in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset. It is always a real pleasure to see our Members and we really appreciate the effort made to come out in all weathers to talk to us.”

Home Emergency Cover - We’re here to help in an emergency

Home should be somewhere to relax and unwind. Finding there is a problem like heating that won’t come on or a burst pipe can be a hassle at best and a major inconvenience at worst. Recent research suggests that a fifth of households end up having problems with their central heating system - something you won’t want to be without for long during a cold snap.
Finding someone well qualified who can help in a hurry can also be a problem, particularly if there has been a spell of bad weather that has caused a sudden rise in demand. Even if a qualified contractor can be found, an emergency call-out and repair can be very expensive.
To ensure that our Members never find themselves in these situations, Cornish Mutual has teamed up with legal expenses insurer ARAG to provide all of our Home policyholders with Home Emergency cover with a line that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and includes:
• contractor’s call-out fee
• labour costs
• parts and repair materials
• cost of alternative accommodation
• up to £1,000 paid per claim
• permanent repairs guaranteed for 12 months
The policy covers the things that most commonly go wrong in the home, whether it’s the heating breaking down, plumbing and drainage issues like burst pipes, lost keys and even vermin infestation.

Sharing Our Mutual Values

At Cornish Mutual we are always looking for new ways to give value to our Members. One way we can grow our business and Member funds is to partner with other insurance companies. That is why we have entered into an agreement with International Insurance Company of Hannover SE to develop a new home insurance product called ‘Affiliate Home Insurance’.

We are now looking to partner with other mutual organisations, who share our ethos and values, to offer Affiliate Home insurance to their Members. Our first partner, Paycare, is a not-for-profit membership organisation specialising in health cash-plans.  Although their home insurance policy will be serviced by us, Paycare Customers will have a Inter Hannover Policy and will not become Cornish Mutual Members. That means that profits from servicing the business will be invested back in to Cornish Mutual, but we do not have to provide any investment from our own funds for the insurance products.

More Ways To Pay

Cornish Mutual is pleased to announce that Members can now pay their premiums by Annual One Direct Debit or Two Direct Debits.
The new payment plans were introduced in October and are already proving to be a hit with our Members. Many have informed us that the payment options are a great idea and make paying premiums hassle free.
Both plans will give you the flexibility to pay your premiums on a Direct Debit plan, with zero interest charged, on a payment date of your choice. Your policy automatically renews on the anniversary of your renewal date, removing the hassle of having to forward a cheque or call to pay by card.
Give Cornish Mutual a call on 01872 277151 to discuss your payment options.

Expanding our Dorset team

We have expanded our Dorset team, by recruiting a new member of our Field Force. Nick Bunting is now providing on-the-ground support to Cornish Mutual Members along the South Dorset coast, from Bridport to Bournemouth.
Nick lives with his wife and two young daughters in a village between Bridport and Dorchester. In his spare time he is a keen shooter and fisherman and helps to manage the vineyard at his in-laws’ former dairy farm.
Speaking of his appointment to Cornish Mutual, Nick said: “I am delighted to be serving the community where I live. As a mutual organisation, Cornish Mutual puts its Members at the heart of everything they do. Their honesty really shines through and the staff are clearly passionate about their work.”
Cornish Mutual Sales & Operations Leader Philip Wilson said: “Our Field Force team provide a vital role – they are on the ground, visiting their local farms and businesses to support our Members on a daily basis. Nick is very personable and has a really warm personality that we think our Members will appreciate. We are delighted to have him on board to help us expand in Dorset.”
