Despite industry reports that many golf businesses have felt the squeeze during the tough economic times, Cornish Mutual Member Phil Stanbury and his wife Nik are bucking the trend and enjoying steady year-round business at one of the most stunningly located 9-hole golf courses in Cornwall.
Fourteen years ago, Phil took over Ivyleaf Golf Course & Driving Range from his father. From its hilltop location just off the A39 between Bude and Kilkhampton, the course overlooks an incredible vista of the North Cornwall coast going from Trevose Head to Bude on the coast and then inland to both Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor. It is popular with both locals and visitors alike.
Open seven days a week, Ivyleaf offers an affordable and accessible way to enjoy a game of golf. The par 32 course has seen several changes since the baton passed from father to son, but staying close to its original charm is something to which Phil Stanbury and his wife are firmly committed: “We’re located in an area of outstanding natural beauty which inevitably draws people to us. They like the fact that we offer a great 9-hole course that can be enjoyed by beginners and more experienced players alike with a driving range where people can brush up on their skills, but without the formality and expense of being a subscribed member of a golf club.
“Since taking over the business from my father we’ve lengthened the course, added the range and made a few other improvements to the site and facilities and I have been pleased that Cornish Mutual has been there every step of the way to support me,” he adds.
“My father originally had several policies with Cornish Mutual and was very happy with the services they provided. As small business owners, we value having regular contact from a familiar face and being treated as a person rather than a policy number.”
