If you encounter an event which means
you might need to make a claim there are a few things that you can
consider doing in order to help the claims process.
The most important consideration is your safety. Only if it is
safe to do so secure the site of the incident so that no-one else
can be injured and/or no further damage can be caused.
Please remember that we might ask for evidence, that the
incident has taken place, to support the claim.
Important news for motor policyholders
As from 6th April 2010 personal injury claims arising out of
Road Traffic Accidents will be subject to new regulations where the
amount claimed is less than £10k.
The reforms include a strict timetable for all parties concerned -
in particular under the new rules we, as your insurers, will only
have 15 working days in which to make a decision
on liability. This is from the date any third party lodges a claim
for damages for personal injury.
Under the current system it is three months.
Failure to meet this time limit will leave us open to significant
solicitor's costs penalties which will inevitably impact on future
premiums.
We are therefore asking all Cornish Mutual Members to ensure that
if you are involved in a road traffic accident, however minor,
please let our claims department know as soon as possible. This is
so that we can maximise the time we have available to us to resolve
our position on liability with your agreement.
The Claims Department would be happy to help you with any
questions you may have on this matter please call them on 01872
277151 or email claims@cornishmutual.co.uk.
Motor Claims
Accidents
If you have been involved in a vehicle accident, try to ensure
that the vehicle is moved to a safe place where it isn't a hazard
to others.
If a third party has been involved in the accident please obtain
their name, contact details and the vehicle registration number. If
the accident is their fault we will want to claim damages from
them: this won't be possible if we can't contact them and your No
Claims Discount may be affected.
If you have a camera or mobile phone that takes pictures, please
photograph the incident, if it is safe to do so, in case we need to
use it as evidence at a later date.
Windscreens
Prevention is better than cure. If you have a chip on your
windscreen we would prefer that you repaired it in order to prevent
a broken windscreen.
We therefore do not charge an excess if the glass does not have
to be replaced so if you would like a chip repaired please contact
National Mobile Windscreens on 0800 373 171 they will ask for the
Policy Number and the renewal date of your Cornish Mutual Policy
and arrange for a local repairer to contact you to arrange a
convenient time for the chip to be repaired.
