Rural issues at the heart of ForumRegional farming and rural issues will be top of the agenda at an event being organised by the South West’s only general insurance firm next week (Wednesday 13 January).

Experts from Cornish Mutual are hosting the Forum at Crealy Adventure Park near Exeter with the theme ‘protecting the family farm.’

The company is giving its Members the opportunity to share their experiences of Cornish Mutual and the service it provides. Members will be able to put questions directly to the Managing Director Alan Goddard and a number of the firm’s Inspectors will be available to provide help and advice.

Alan Goddard, Managing Director of Cornish Mutual said: “As a mutual organisation we exist to provide our Members with the best possible service and because we have no shareholders, they are absolutely central to everything we do. We want to know exactly what our Members think of us and how we can further improve our service, the products we offer and the experiences they’ve had.”

South West legal firm Stephens Scown, which has a dedicated rural team across Exeter, Truro and St Austell, is joining forces with Cornish Mutual for the event. Partner Richard Baker, who heads up the team, will be one of the guest speakers during the evening. He specialises in agricultural matters and diversification.

His team will talk about protecting the family farm and will concentrate on four areas of law including property, litigation, family and private client work.

Richard added: “It’s really important for people to plan for the future and by working alongside Cornish Mutual we can provide a more rounded approach to both legal and financial questions or concerns that they may have. Getting the right information and advice is crucial and this is a fantastic opportunity for Members of the rural community across the region to tap into.”

He said: “There are many issues which affect people living and working in the agricultural sector across the South West – it can be quite a complex picture. I’ve no doubt that people attending will benefit greatly from the Forum. The rural market is unique in many ways having a broader requirement for legal expertise than probably any other area.”

“As all landowners come under increasing economic and social pressure, it is essential they have advisors that really understand the sector and can provide advice tailored to their personal requirements.”

Alan added: “From Stephen Scown’s team, we’ll hear about some of the issues around protecting the family farm in order to keep it in the family and how to plan accordingly. Clearly, there are a number of current agricultural legal issues which will undoubtedly have a significant impact on farmers and landowners in the region and it will be good to hear from rural legal experts, their advice and views on them.”
